A World At End - Short Story
The following story was thought of in a writing activity by students of American Council Egypt. They came up with the outline and plot, and their teacher (Mahmoud Kabbary) polished their plot into what you are about to read. The students are:
1- Abdelrahman Ragab Abdo
2- Youmna Ragab Abdo
3- Alaa Adel Ramadan
Once upon a time in the town of Evesham, north
of Cotswold, England, lived a genius along his peaceful protégé. Both were men
of science, who worked their entire life experimenting new theories of
Astrophysics. In the Genius's mind, he believes in a life which exists up there
far away in space. And he wanted to prove so. Years passed until one day, they came to the discovery that changed their lives forever.
They've approached what seemed to be a contact attempt from an extraterrestrial
species. For months to follow they've kept the "contact" alive.
Trying to get more details of what is happening beyond the horizon of their
expectations. 3 months after the first attempt they managed to decipher the
countless amount of data they gathered. To their surprise, it was not a
welcoming message as they thought it would be. Aliens are threatening the
planet with its demise and extinction. In a hurry, both men gathered all information
they've managed to collect, which proved their theory of a certain attack on
planet earth.
Once they reached London, they sought the
King’s court. After hours of deliberation with him, he was convinced of their
efforts and decided to assign them his loyal servant. Although loyal to the
King, the servant was a wreck-of-a-person, who did not believe in their
“madness” as he described it. The Wreck was an intelligent guide. He knew the
right whereabouts and how to come up with a plan. One of those days when he was
checking the defenses, he was approached by a strange beam-of-light that exposed itself to be a communicator sent by the aliens to him. The aliens
and the Guide came to an agreement to prevent the Scientist from achieving his
goals, and in exchange for his services, the aliens will reward him with the
throne of England. Meanwhile, the Genius scientist was trying to beat time. He
was able to gather a small group of men he and the king could trust. The word
was secretly sent to the most courageous man in England, the Adventurous. They
appointed him the mission of finding and destroying alien transmitters, as the
Genius explained, would blink to bring the mother-ship.
The king held a secret meeting at his chamber,
gathering the entire team. 5 hours later after the meeting was done, a plan was
fully intact. The Genius was to create a device that was going to radiate
enough power to revert the alien invasion back to their home. The Peaceful
assistant was to help his employer, while the Guide was to find a specific place of the transmitters and tell the Adventurous who would use the newly
invented weapon to destroy them. In sync, they’ve worked together, taking down
as many alien transmitters as they possibly could, despite the efforts of the
Guide to mislead them. But to his surprise, the Adventurous saw through his
schemes. The unfortunate Peaceful assistant was abducted while helping the
Adventurous detect a trace of a transmitter. Angrily the commander of the
alien mother-ship informed the Guide to lure the team into a trap. The aliens
wanted to negotiate a deal with the king as the Guide informed them. Both the
Genius and the Adventurous did not feel comfortable with the proposal and felt
that there must be something more to this and they indeed should finish the job
and save their fallen brother-in-arms. But alas the king did not listen to
them, he only listened to his loyal servant or so he thought.
